An accessible classic should still be the classic. Every Clever Girl Press edition is guided by fidelity to the original work, respect for the reader, and context that earns its place.
What readers can expect.
Clever Girl Press publishes complete classic works for readers who want the author’s book—not a shortened retelling or a simplified substitute.
Our editions pair the original work with carefully chosen context and reader aids. Editorial additions are clearly distinguishable from the author’s text and are included only when they help readers understand, navigate, or enjoy the book.
The original work remains central.
We do not flatten distinctive language, remove difficult passages, or modernize an author’s style merely because it feels unfamiliar. Historical works should be encountered as works of their own time.
Notes may clarify period language, institutions, geography, material culture, and historical references. They should illuminate the book without taking it over. Front matter and every public website guide remain spoiler-free.
What accessibility means here: not making a book simpler, but making its language, setting, structure, and evidence easier to navigate.
Reader support should serve the book.
Depending on the title, an edition may include maps, timelines, character guides, glossaries, image descriptions, or historical notes. These features are designed to answer genuine reader questions while leaving room for discovery.
Half-Mast Murder includes support for following its estate setting. Birds Through an Opera-Glass helps readers understand historical bird names. The first Desmond Merrion mystery offers context for its village, river, and period vocabulary.
Accountability stays with the press.
